The MARKET SHACK

Learnings

Know it
on the day

The market numbers an interviewer in India expects you to know without looking them up. Each one shows the latest figure in our data, the date it is from, what it does to markets and the questions that tend to follow.

RBI and prices

Policy rate and inflation

RBI repo rate

5.50%

RBI site, 23 Oct 2026

  • SDF 5.25% · MSF 5.75% (RBI site, 23 Oct 2026)
  • CRR 3.00% (RBI site, 23 Oct 2026)
  • SLR 18.00% (RBI site, 23 Oct 2026)
  • Last MPC: Hike, 25 bp, 7 Oct 2026. All recent meetings

The repo rate is what banks pay to borrow overnight from the RBI. A hike makes loans dearer and cools demand and inflation, and it tends to push bond yields and the rupee up and equity valuations down. The SDF and MSF sit just below and above it, and keep overnight money-market rates inside that band.

What they ask next

  • What did the MPC decide at its last meeting, and what is the stance now?
  • How does a repo hike reach the rate on a home loan? (Think of how bank lending rates are linked to it.)
  • What are CRR and SLR, and how do they differ from the repo rate as tools?

CPI inflation, year on year

5.54%

MOSPI, September 2026

  • Real policy rate (repo minus CPI) −0.04 pts
  • The month before 4.83%

CPI inflation is how much consumer prices rose over the past year. It is the number the RBI targets, so a rising print raises the odds of a hike and a falling one opens room for cuts. Take it away from the repo rate to get the real policy rate, which tells you whether policy is actually tight.

What they ask next

  • What is the RBI's inflation target, and how wide is the band around it?
  • Why does food matter so much in India’s CPI, and why do people watch core inflation?
  • Is monetary policy tight or loose once you adjust for inflation?

Bonds

Bond yields

India 10-year government bond yield

7.47%

23 Oct 2026 · CCIL

  • Above the repo rate by 197 bp
  • Above the US 10-year by 248 bp
  • Day +2 bp · Week +9 bp

The 10-year G-sec yield is what the market charges to lend to the government for ten years. Analysts use it as the rupee risk-free rate in a DCF, so a higher yield lowers the value of every long-dated cash flow. It moves with the repo rate, inflation expectations, government borrowing and foreign demand for Indian bonds.

What they ask next

  • If yields rise, what happens to bond prices, and why?
  • Why is the 10-year G-sec used as the risk-free rate?
  • What would a repo cut do to the short end and the long end of the curve?

US 10-year Treasury yield

4.99%

Close, 23 Oct 2026 · Yahoo Finance

  • Month −13 bp · Year +100 bp

The US 10-year yield is the benchmark risk-free rate for the world. When it rises, money tends to move back to the US, which pressures emerging-market currencies and foreign buying of Indian stocks and bonds. The gap between Indian and US yields is one thing foreign bond investors weigh.

What they ask next

  • Why does a rise in US yields hurt emerging markets like India?
  • How is the Fed’s policy rate connected to the 10-year yield?

Currency

The rupee and the dollar

US dollar in rupees

₹94.71per $

Close, 23 Oct 2026 · Yahoo Finance

  • Month −1.0% · Year +7.9%

This is how many rupees one dollar buys, so a higher number means a weaker rupee. A weak rupee helps exporters such as IT services and pharma and hurts importers, oil above all. It also cuts the dollar return of foreign investors, which can set off selling.

What they ask next

  • Which sectors gain and which lose when the rupee weakens?
  • How does the RBI defend the rupee, and what does that do to liquidity?
  • Why does a wider trade deficit weigh on the rupee?

US dollar index (DXY)

101.81

Close, 23 Oct 2026 · Yahoo Finance

  • Month +0.7% · Year +2.9%

The dollar index measures the dollar against a basket of major currencies. A strong dollar usually means weaker emerging-market currencies and tighter money worldwide, which tends to slow foreign flows into India.

What they ask next

  • Why does the rupee often fall when the dollar index rises?
  • What tends to make the dollar stronger?

Equities

The Nifty and what it costs

Nifty 50

22,600.00

Close, 23 Oct 2026 · Yahoo Finance

  • This year −13.5% · 1 year −12.7%
  • 52-week range 22,179.90 to 26,373.20 (NSE, 23 Oct 2026)
  • From its 52-week high −14.3% (against NSE's intraday high, not the highest close)

The Nifty 50 holds fifty of the largest listed Indian companies and is the headline gauge of the market. Know where it is, how far it sits from its 52-week high and what drove the latest move. A level alone is not enough. Interviewers want a view and the reason for it.

What they ask next

  • Where do you see the Nifty in a year, and why?
  • How is the Nifty different from the Sensex?
  • What does a stock’s beta against the Nifty tell you?

Nifty 50 price to earnings

19.05×

23 Oct 2026 · NSE's index snapshot

  • Price to book 2.78
  • Dividend yield 1.52%
  • Earnings yield (1 ÷ P/E) 5.25%

P/E is the index price over its companies’ earnings, so it says how many years of today’s profit the market is paying for. On its own it proves little: compare it with the index’s own history, and set the earnings yield, one over P/E, against the 10-year G-sec yield. P/B and dividend yield are the cross-checks.

What they ask next

  • Is the Indian market expensive right now? Defend your answer.
  • Why might one market deserve a higher P/E than another?
  • What happens to a company’s P/E after a stock split?

India VIX

16.86

Close, 23 Oct 2026 · Yahoo Finance

  • Month +62.9% · Year +43.7%

India VIX is the swing in the Nifty that the options market expects over the coming month, worked out from option prices. It rises when traders pay up for protection, so it usually jumps when the market falls. A low VIX means calm, not safety.

What they ask next

  • Why does VIX usually move the opposite way to the Nifty?
  • What happens to option premiums when VIX rises?

Commodities

Oil and gold

Brent crude

$116.72a barrel

Close, 23 Oct 2026 · Yahoo Finance

  • Month +13.2% · Year +76.9%

India imports most of the crude oil it uses, so dearer oil widens the trade deficit, weakens the rupee and feeds inflation. Oil marketing companies, paints, tyres and airlines feel it in their margins, while oil producers gain.

What they ask next

  • What does a lasting rise in crude do to the current account and the rupee?
  • Which sectors win and which lose when oil falls?

Gold

$4,007.90an ounce

Close, 23 Oct 2026 · Yahoo Finance

  • Month −7.2% · Year −3.3%

Gold tends to rise when real interest rates fall, when the dollar weakens or when investors want safety. India is one of the largest buyers, so gold imports also add to the trade deficit.

What they ask next

  • Why does gold often rise when real rates fall?
  • Why does the government worry about gold imports?

Money and breadth

Who is buying, and how many stocks join in

Foreign investors (FII), net, cash market

+₹888 cr

23 Oct 2026 · NSE provisional figures

  • Domestic institutions the same day +₹3,235 cr
  • Over the last 20 sessions, from 24 Sep 2026: foreign −₹85,670 cr, domestic +₹89,663 cr

Foreign portfolio investors and domestic institutions, mostly mutual funds and insurers, are the two big buyers and sellers in the cash market. Foreign selling has often been met by domestic buying, helped by steady SIP money into mutual funds. Large foreign outflows also weigh on the rupee.

What they ask next

  • Why have domestic flows become a cushion for the market?
  • What makes foreign investors sell Indian equities?

Nifty 500 stocks above their 200-day average

26.7%

133 of 499 · week to 23 Oct

  • Week −14.3 pts · Month −22.1 pts

This counts how many Nifty 500 stocks closed above their own 200-day moving average. When few do, a rising index is being carried by a handful of large names; when most do, the rally is broad. It shows you look past the headline index.

What they ask next

  • Can the index rise while most stocks fall? How?
  • What does a 200-day moving average tell you?

RBI

The last MPC decisions

Interviewers often ask what the last policy meeting did. Knowing the rate is only half of it. Each row is from RBI's own resolution, linked.

MeetingDecisionRepoSDFMSFStance and vote
October 5 to 7, 2026 Hike, 25 bp 5.50% 5.25% 5.75% Calibrated tightening. Unanimous on the rate; two members wanted the stance kept neutral.

April 6 to 8, 2026 Hold 5.25% 5.00% 5.50% Neutral. Unanimous.

SDF is the standing deposit facility, the floor of the corridor. MSF is the marginal standing facility, its ceiling; the Bank Rate sits with it. Earlier meetings are not listed yet.

What you still need elsewhere

Interviewers also ask about GDP growth, the fiscal deficit, FX reserves and whether the Nifty looks expensive against its own history. The site does not collect those figures, so they are left off rather than guessed. Read the latest MOSPI and RBI releases for them.
